CONFIRM JANICE ROGERS BROWN
October 22, 2003
(WASHINGTON, DC) – The Coalition for a Fair Judiciary today announced its endorsement of Janice Rogers Brown, nominee to the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals. Brown is testifying today at her confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
“Janice Rogers Brown is an extraordinary nominee with a compelling personal story,” said Kay Daly, president of the Coalition for a Fair Judiciary. “As the daughter of Alabama sharecroppers, she was the first in her family to attend college. Her stellar career is a testament to her determination to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.”
Justice Brown currently serves as an Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court, a position she has held since May 1996. She is the first African-American woman to serve on the State's highest court, and was retained with 76 percent of the vote in her last election.
In 2002, Justice Brown's colleagues relied on her to write the majority opinion for the Court more times than any other Justice. Prior to her appointment and confirmation to the California Supreme Court, Justice Brown served from 1994-96 as an Associate Justice on the Third District Court of Appeals, an intermediate state appellate court.
“Instead of celebrating Justice Brown’s accomplishments and supporting her nomination enthusiastically, extreme elements of the left wing are pulling out the stops to prevent her confirmation to the second highest court in the nation,” said Daly. “Why? Because she applies the law as she finds it. You will not find Janice Rogers Brown emanating in any penumbras or stretching the law to embrace the left-wing agenda.
“In fact, Justice Brown’s record definitively shows dedication not to a particular ideological stripe but a wholehearted embrace of the rule of law, “said Daly. “And the Left just can’t stand it. “
The Coalition for a Fair Judiciary The Coalition for a Fair Judiciary is a 501(C)4 organization comprised of more than 75 grassroots organizations dedicated to supporting qualified, capable federal judicial nominees who are committed to fair and accurate interpretation of existing law. Judicial activism, characterized by rulings that create law rather than apply the law, has had a detrimental impact on American society and commerce. We seek to support federal judicial nominees who, in the words of Socrates, will “hear courteously, answer wisely, consider soberly and decide impartially.”
