U.S. District Judge Gary Lancaster, appointed by Bill Clinton, dismissed federal obscenity charges against a California couple and their pornographic business that distributed X-rated videos which depict murder and rape. This was the first federal obscenity prosecution in decades against a pornographic material producer. The case was filed in the U. S. District Court in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania against Extreme Associates Inc. and its owners. Judge Lancaster dismissed all 10 counts in the obscenity indictment against Robert Zicari and his wife, Janet Romano, known as "Lizzie Borden". U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan said that her office is reviewing the ruling and examining options, including appealing to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. If convicted, each defendant faced up to 50 years in prison and up to a $2.5 million fine.
